Ingredients
  

For the filling:

  • 6 cups sliced apples about 6-7 medium apples
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon ground allspice
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

For the topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter cold and cubed
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the filling:

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick slices.
  • In a large bowl, mix sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, lemon juice, and cornstarch.
  • Toss until apples are evenly coated.
  • Pour the mixture into a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Make the topping:

  • In a medium bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
  • Add cold, cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in chopped nuts if using.

Assemble and bake:

  • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture.
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
  • If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil.
