Ingredients

For the Beef and Broccoli

  • 1 ½ pounds flank steak or sirloin thinly sliced
  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated
  • 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For Serving

  • Cooked white rice or jasmine rice
  • Sesame seeds
  • Sliced green onions

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Sauce

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil until fully combined.
  • The sauce should smell savory, slightly sweet, and rich with garlic and ginger flavor.

Step 2: Add Beef to the Slow Cooker

  • Place the sliced beef into the crockpot and pour the sauce over the top. Stir gently to coat all the pieces evenly.
  • Cover and cook on:
  • LOW for 5-6 hours
  • HIGH for 2½-3 hours
  • Cooking on low produces the most tender results.

Step 3: Thicken the Sauce

  • About 30 minutes before serving, whisk together the cornstarch and water in a small bowl to create a slurry.
  • Pour the slurry into the crockpot and stir well. This helps transform the sauce into a rich, glossy coating that clings perfectly to the beef and rice.

Step 4: Add the Broccoli

  • Add the broccoli florets during the final 20–30 minutes of cooking.
  • This timing is important because it keeps the broccoli tender-crisp instead of mushy. The broccoli absorbs some of the flavorful sauce while still maintaining texture and freshness.

Step 5: Serve Over Rice

  • Spoon the beef and broccoli generously over freshly cooked rice. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions for extra flavor and texture.
  • Serve immediately while warm
